Flat towing, also called four-down towing, is popular because it lets RV owners bring a daily driver, trail vehicle, or runabout without a trailer. But it is not a one-size-fits-all purchase. Your motorhome, the vehicle being towed, the vehicle’s approved towing procedure, and the weight of the complete setup all determine what equipment belongs on the job.
Start With the Vehicle You Plan to Tow
Before choosing a tow bar or shopping by price, confirm that the vehicle can be flat towed. Some vehicles are approved for four-down towing only under certain drivetrain configurations, model years, speed limits, or preparation steps. Others need to be towed on a dolly or trailer instead. Never assume that a four-wheel-drive badge means a vehicle can be pulled with all four tires on the pavement.
Check the owner’s manual for the exact year, make, model, drivetrain, and transmission. Pay close attention to requirements involving transfer-case position, ignition mode, battery disconnects, fuses, mileage limits, and steering-wheel position. A vehicle may be capable of flat towing but still require a specific procedure before every trip.
Then confirm the actual curb weight and compare it to your motorhome’s rated towing capacity. The number that matters is not a guess based on vehicle size. It is the loaded weight of the towed vehicle, including cargo, accessories, tools, and anything else that stays inside it. Your tow bar, baseplate, safety cables, and supplemental braking system must all be rated for the work.

A dependable flat-tow system is a matched system. It starts at the front of the towed vehicle, continues through the tow bar, and ends with the motorhome’s hitch receiver. Every connection point needs to be compatible, properly rated, and installed at the correct height.
Baseplates Create the Vehicle-Specific Mount
The baseplate is the steel mounting structure attached to the towed vehicle’s frame. It provides the attachment points for the tow bar and is one of the most important fitment decisions in the entire setup. Baseplates are vehicle-specific because bumper design, frame structure, cooling components, sensors, and trim panels vary widely from one application to another.
A correctly matched baseplate should fit the exact vehicle configuration, not simply a similar-looking model. Small differences in year range, trim level, tow hooks, grille shutters, skid plates, or active safety equipment can change what fits. If you are unsure, use year/make/model fitment tools and verify the details before ordering.
Installation quality matters just as much as the part number. The baseplate carries repeated push-and-pull loads over thousands of miles. Fasteners must be torqued to specification, hardware must be installed in the correct locations, and any removed bumper components must be reassembled properly. Tow Bars Need the Right Rating and Height
The tow bar joins the motorhome to the baseplate. Self-aligning, non-binding tow bars are often the practical choice for RV owners because they make hookups easier on uneven campsites and simplify disconnecting after a long day on the road.
Choose a tow bar with a weight rating above the loaded weight of your towed vehicle. More capacity is not a substitute for proper setup, but running too close to the rating leaves little margin for real-world use. Also confirm the tow bar’s connection style matches the baseplate or has the appropriate approved adapter.
Tow-bar height deserves close attention. The bar should sit as level as practical when the motorhome and towed vehicle are connected on level ground. A steep rise or drop can affect handling and put unnecessary stress on components. A properly rated drop or rise receiver can correct height differences, but it must not reduce the capacity of the overall setup.
Safety Cables Are Not Optional Backup Gear
Safety cables or chains provide a secondary connection if the primary tow-bar connection fails. They should be crossed beneath the tow bar so they can help support it rather than let it strike the pavement. Route them with enough length for turns, but not so much slack that they drag, snag, or rub against sharp edges.
Use cables rated for the vehicle’s weight and inspect the hooks, latches, protective coating, and attachment points before travel. Frayed cables, bent hooks, cracked coatings, and stretched connectors are reasons to replace the equipment, not reasons to hope for one more trip.
Braking and Breakaway Protection
A supplemental braking system helps the towed vehicle slow with the motorhome. It improves control, reduces strain on the motorhome braking system, and may be required by law depending on the weight of the towed vehicle and the states you travel through. Requirements vary, so know the rules for your route, not just your home state.
There are portable braking units, permanently installed systems, and systems that use the motorhome’s air or hydraulic brakes. The right choice depends on how often you tow, how many vehicles you may tow, your motorhome’s brake configuration, and how much setup time you are willing to handle at each stop.
Portable systems can offer flexibility for owners who change vehicles or tow only occasionally. Permanently installed systems cost more up front but can save time and reduce the number of loose components to position, store, and recalibrate. Neither approach is automatically better. The best system is one that fits the vehicles, operates consistently, and gets used correctly every time.
A breakaway device is part of the same safety conversation. If the towed vehicle separates from the motorhome, the breakaway system activates the towed vehicle’s brakes. Its cable should be connected independently to the motorhome, not looped around the tow bar. Check cable routing, battery condition, and function as part of your pre-trip inspection.
Lighting That Other Drivers Can See
Your towed vehicle needs working brake lights, turn signals, and running lights that operate with the motorhome. Wiring options include diode systems, separate bulb-and-socket kits, and wireless lighting systems. The best choice depends on the vehicle’s factory wiring, available installation space, and whether you want a permanent or temporary setup.
Modern vehicles can make lighting more complicated than older trucks and SUVs. Factory LED lighting, computer-controlled circuits, blind-spot monitoring, and other electronics may require a vehicle-specific approach. The goal is simple: the motorhome and towed vehicle signals must work correctly without backfeeding power or causing electrical faults.
Before every trip, have someone stand behind the towed vehicle while you check running lights, left turn, right turn, brake lights, and hazard flashers. This takes two minutes and catches problems before you merge into traffic after dark.
Small Equipment That Prevents Big Hassles
The core towing components get most of the attention, but several smaller items make the setup safer and easier to live with. A hitch lock protects the receiver connection. A cover or storage bag keeps tow-bar components cleaner when parked. A charge line can help maintain the towed vehicle battery when a braking system, auxiliary braking monitor, or vehicle towing procedure draws power.
You may also need a battery disconnect, fuse bypass, or other vehicle-specific accessory if the owner’s manual calls for it. Do not treat these items as optional add-ons. If the vehicle requires one to prevent battery drain or protect its electrical system while being towed, it is part of the proper towing package.
Keep a compact towing kit in the motorhome with gloves, a flashlight, a tire-pressure gauge, spare hitch pins, and the instructions for your braking system. Those items are inexpensive until you need them on a rainy shoulder or at a campground after sunset.
A Pre-Trip Check Worth Repeating
A careful hookup routine is more valuable than rushing through the same familiar steps. Walk around the full setup before departure. Verify tow-bar pins and retaining clips are fully installed, cables are crossed and clear, electrical plugs are secure, the braking system is armed, and the breakaway cable is independently attached.
Check tire condition and pressure on both the motorhome and the towed vehicle. Look underneath for hanging wiring, fluid leaks, or anything that could contact the road. Once you pull forward a short distance, stop again and confirm the tow-bar arms have locked into position.
