How to Measure a Truck for a Flatbed That Fits
A flatbed that is too short leaves useful frame exposed. One that is too long can create clearance problems, poor weight distribution, and a rough-looking install. The way you measure a truck for a flatbed determines whether the finished bed works like equipment should – solid, square, and ready for real use.
Do not order a flatbed based on a truck’s model name or advertised wheelbase alone. Two trucks that look nearly identical can have different cab-to-axle dimensions, frame layouts, fuel tank locations, or rear overhang requirements. Take a few careful measurements before choosing a standard bed or requesting a custom build.
What to Do Before You Measure a Truck for a Flatbed
Park the truck on level ground with the wheels pointed straight. If the factory pickup bed is still installed, you can take several measurements from underneath, but the most accurate frame and mounting measurements come after the old bed is removed.
Use a quality tape measure that is long enough to reach the full frame length. A 25-foot tape works for many pickups, while larger cab-and-chassis trucks may call for a longer tape. Have a notepad, marker, and a second person available. Measuring alone is possible, but it is easier to lose accuracy when a tape bends, sags, or hooks on a crossmember.
Write every measurement down as you take it. Measure twice before making a final decision. A half-inch may not sound like much, but it matters around cab clearance, mounts, fenders, and body lines.
Start With the Cab-to-Axle Measurement
Cab-to-axle, often shortened to CA, is one of the most important numbers for flatbed fitment. It is measured from the rear of the cab to the centerline of the rear axle. This dimension helps determine the proper bed length and where the wheel openings or fenders need to sit.
Measure from the back surface of the cab, not from the rear window or an exterior trim piece. Run the tape straight back to the exact center of the rear axle hub. If the truck has dual rear wheels, use the centerline of the axle rather than the outside edge of a tire.
Common cab-to-axle dimensions vary by truck configuration. A pickup chassis may have a shorter CA measurement than a comparable cab-and-chassis model. That is why a bed advertised for a certain model year is not automatically a guaranteed fit. The truck’s actual dimensions are what matter.
Leave room behind the cab
Your flatbed needs enough space between the headache rack or front rail and the cab. This clearance allows for cab movement on the frame, protects the paint, and prevents contact when the truck twists under a load. A tight gap may look clean in a photo, but it can become a problem on uneven ground or rough job sites.
If you plan to add a toolbox, headache rack, fuel transfer tank, or other front-mounted equipment, account for its depth now. Build decisions made after the bed is mounted usually cost more and limit your options.
Measure Frame Length and Rear Overhang
Next, measure the usable frame length. Start at the back of the cab and measure to the end of the frame rails. Then measure from the center of the rear axle to the end of the frame. This rear overhang measurement shows how much support is available behind the axle and helps establish a safe, balanced bed layout.
A flatbed should not simply hang off the rear of the truck because a catalog length sounds right. The rear structure, mounting points, bumper area, lights, and hitch access all need to work together. On trucks that will tow regularly, enough room must remain for trailer connections and turning clearance.
Also note anything extending past the frame. A receiver hitch, factory bumper brackets, spare tire carrier, mud flap mounts, or auxiliary equipment may affect the installation. Some items can be retained, moved, or replaced. Others may need to be removed for the new bed to mount correctly.
Check Frame Width and Frame Shape
Measure the outside-to-outside width of both frame rails in several locations: near the rear of the cab, over or near the axle, and at the rear of the frame. Frame rails are not always parallel. Some trucks taper toward the back, and others use brackets or crossmembers that affect how a bed can sit.
Record the top-of-frame height from the ground as well. This helps determine bed height, tire clearance, and whether the finished truck will be practical for loading equipment. A lower deck is convenient for daily work, but it must still clear the tires through full suspension travel.
Look closely at the frame condition while you measure. Rust, bent rails, cracked crossmembers, previous weld repairs, and improvised mounts should be addressed before installing a new flatbed. A heavy steel bed can hide a problem temporarily, but it will not fix a weak foundation.
Identify obstructions before ordering
Walk both sides of the frame and note the location of fuel tanks, filler necks, batteries, exhaust components, brake lines, wiring harnesses, and emissions equipment. These components can affect underbody storage, mounting hardware, skirt options, and access for service.
This is especially important for late-model trucks. A bed may physically fit the frame yet still create trouble if a fuel fill, wiring connection, or service point is blocked. Good flatbed fitment is more than setting steel on rails. It means the truck remains safe, usable, and serviceable after the install.
Measure Width at the Tires and Cab
Flatbeds are commonly wider than the truck cab, but width still needs to be chosen with the truck’s job in mind. Measure the widest point across the rear tires, including sidewalls and any dual-wheel setup. Then measure cab width and mirror width if the truck will regularly work in tight gates, loading areas, or wooded access roads.
For a single-rear-wheel truck, a wider deck can provide useful loading space and room for side storage. For a dual-rear-wheel truck, the bed must properly cover and clear the outside tires while keeping the fenders positioned over the wheel path. Tire clearance is not optional. The suspension needs room to cycle under load without contacting the bed or fender.
If the truck has oversized tires, a lift kit, air springs, or modified suspension, measure the truck as it sits now. Do not rely on factory dimensions. Modifications can change bed height, tire travel, axle position, and clearance needs.
Map the Mounting Points
A flatbed must be mounted to the truck frame using a method suited to that chassis and bed design. Measure and photograph existing mounting holes, brackets, and crossmember locations. Note the distance between them and whether the frame has factory holes that can be used without drilling.
Do not assume old pickup-bed mounting points will line up with a flatbed. Many installations require purpose-built mounting brackets, U-bolts, or other hardware designed to secure the bed while allowing for the truck frame’s normal movement. Drilling, welding, or modifying a frame without understanding the manufacturer’s guidance can create safety and warranty concerns.
Also measure where the rear lights, license plate, trailer plug, and backup camera wiring will need to land. A clean installation protects wiring from road debris and leaves enough slack for service. If your truck tows, confirm the trailer connector will be easy to reach once the bed, bumper, and hitch are in place.
Choose Bed Length for the Work You Actually Do
The right bed length depends on more than fit. Think about what the truck carries most often. A contractor hauling lumber, equipment, and job boxes may prioritize deck length and side access. A farm truck may need durable stake pockets, a gooseneck hitch opening, and room for a heavy payload. A daily-driven work truck may benefit from a shorter bed that is easier to park and maneuver.
Longer is not always better. Extra length adds weight behind the axle and can reduce departure angle. A shorter bed may improve maneuverability, but it can limit cargo capacity and leave less room for tool storage. Match the bed to the wheelbase, payload demands, towing setup, and terrain the truck sees every week.
